Cottonfruit is a type of tropical fruit that originated in Southeast Asia and has the scientific name, Sandoricum kaotjape. This fruit is a native of the Peninsular Malaysia. It is a delicious fruit which has a sour to sweet taste. It’s usually eaten raw with salt on the side and in some countries; shrimp paste is also added. But do you know that aside from being the delicious fruit that it is, it also provides your body with numerous health benefits?

Cottonfruit is loaded with Vitamin B which aids in the proper function of the brain. It also has Vitamin C which acts as the defense of the body against infections and bacteria. Vitamin C also enhances the proper function of collagen in the body; binding the tissues and cells together thus preventing skin sagging and premature aging. The minerals iron, calcium and phosphorus are also present in this fruit and these are very important for bone health and blood oxygenation.


Its calcium properties help in proper contraction of the heart which in turn helps to avoid having Arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat.


This fruit has a high fiber content and low glycemic index which prevent the unexpected fall or rise of the blood sugar levels which may pose a danger for your health. Fiber also helps in digestion; eliminating damaging materials in the body. Cottonfruits’s pulp is loaded with sandorium and bryonic aicd that helps the body fight off allergies which happens to be a common problem in diabetics. This too will help in avoiding the diabetic from skin itching which can pose a problem because people with diabetes have a hard time in healing wounds.


Cottonfruit also contains potassium which happens to be the most important element in the body. The potassium in cottonfruit aids in maintaining the homeostatis of the body like the muscle nerve action. If there’s not enough potassium in the body, the muscles may become weak thus affecting the movement and might even cause injury.

Coconut Milk and Cottonfruit


  • Cottonfruit (seeded, peeled, and chopped) – 400gms.
  • Cubed pork – ¼ kilo
  • Cooking Oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic (crushed) – 2 tbsps.
  • Shrimp broth cubes – 2 pcs.
  • Onion (sliced) – ½ cup
  • Chili – 3 pcs.
  • Coconut Milk – 1 ½ cup

How to Prepare;

  • Soak chopped cottonfruit in water with salt for thirty minutes
  • Drain then squeeze dry.
  • Heat the oil in a pan then sauté garlic and onion for about 3 minutes until tender.
  • Add the pork and shrimp cubes then allow settling for about 3 minutes.
  • Pour the coconut milk then simmer for fifteen minutes.
  • Add the chilli.
  • Turn off the heat when the cottonfruit has become soft.
